win the competition. Libya dropped to 0-4 to come at the bottom
of the table.
The Tunisian coach was happy to win the cup and hoped to

Day 4
Tunisia one step towards the Cup, Egypt edges Algeria
Cairo,
Egypt, December 24, 2008- The defending champions Tunisia
becomes one step towards keeping the title of the 2008 Boys
Youth African Nations Championship in their homeland following
their thirds victory in a raw over Burundi in the competition’s
fourth day here at Cairo Stadium Complex on Wednesday. The
organizers Egypt rebounded after their critical defeat against
Tunisia and achieved their third victory over Algeria in their
last match in the competition to secure the second position.
Tunisia plays Libya in the fifth and final day of the round
robin competition and if they win, the title will be Tunisian,
while Algeria plays Burundi for the third position.
The matches were attended by CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani,
Local Organizing Committee and FEVB President Ali Elsergany, SOC
Delegate Joseph Mokanda, Referee Delegate Hassan Ahmed CAVB
Technical Director Mrs. Howyda Mondy and the competition Manager
Gamal Sheha.
It is known that 2008 African Nations Championship features
five teams Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Burundi who play a
round robin tournament determining the African champions and the
qualifiers to the 2009 FIVB World Championship.
Egypt vs. Algeria
Egypt regained the original performance one day after losing
against Tunisia since 24 hours and swept Algeria 3-0 (25-22,
25-17, 25-17) in 74 minutes. Egypt played their best match in
the competition in attacks and defense specially the setter
Ahmed Kotb and the opposite Moustafa Idris who scored 8 points
in the match and also did a lot in defense. Egypt improved their
record to 3-1 and finished their matches with 7 points while
Algeria dropped to 1-2 with 4 points.
Egypt head coach Reda Elghazale said that his players were
different quality in the match than against Tunisia. “I know
that the problem of my players was the lack of experience
because they trained for only three monthes before the
competition and when they are under pressure they lose the
concentration. Today we were better in defense and attacks
specially after we won the critical first set.” He said
Algeria head coach Abdelhakim Djehiche was sad because of the
players’ performance and the referee decisions. “I think my
players lost their concentration when the referee had some
decisions and after they lost their concentration to lose easily
the second and third sets.” He said
The Algerian players were more concentrated as the wing spiker
Sofian Haichour did well in spiking from position 4 with the aid
of the strong middle blockers. Algeria used also the frequent
mistakes of the Egyptian players in reception and serving to
lead 8-3 at the first technical timeout (FTT). Egypt players
regained the rhythm as the opposite Moustafa Idris and the left
attacker Eslam Aboulhassan sent their strong hits to lead for
the first time 16-15 at the second technical timeout (STT). By
the time the Egyptian players became more aggressive in attacks
to finish the set 25-22.
The Egyptian players kept their momentum in the second set as
the setter Ahmed Kotb led the combinations by the net and used
the wing spikers Amr Elsakkar and Aboulhassan as well as the
impermeable block of Mohamed Elaskalany and Mohamed Elmahy to
widely lead all through the set. Although Algeria tried to come
back when Egypt led 16-8 through improving the backline defense
and the reception they couldn’t catch the set as Egypt went
through to win 25-17.
The third set showed also Egyptian domination through the
efficient blockers and the strong services that disturbed the
Algerian block and backline defense. The Algerian players
facilitate the duty also with the frequent reception and digging
mistakes that cost them to lose the set 25-17 and Egypt won the
match in straight sets.
Tunisia vs. Burundi
Tunisia continued their clean sheet and pulled of their third
victory over Burundi 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-13) in 65 minutes.
Burundi surprised the audience with the highly motivated
performance in the first set and the team was near to win the
set that was won by Tunisia narrowly 25-23. The Tunisian players
took the match seriously in the second and third sets when their
big gun the opposite Brahim Besbes sent his unstoppable hits
from position 2 with the aid of the combinations from the
skillful setter Mahdi Sammoud who was the main factor of the
victory. Tunisia improved their record to 3-0 with 6 points from
three matches while Burundi dropped to 1-2.
The Tunisian head coach Lotfi Ben Slimane referred the low
performance in the first set to the psychobiological aspect
after the big victory against Egypt in the previous day. “We
played the most difficult set in the competition during the
first set against Burundi when they led many times and were more
serious in defense. I think this team is very promising if their
players got enough training in future. This is a usual reaction
in all the Arab players; the performance is usually low when
they are sure of the victory. I will ask my players to
concentrate on the last match tomorrow against Libya because the
competition hasn’t finished yet.” Slimane said.
On the other hand the Egyptian head coach of Burundi Ahmed
Elgazar was proud of his player after the match because they did
well as a whole although they didn’t train for a long time. “I’m
happy with the spirit of my player and we were near to have a
big surprise if we won the first set. I changed some positions
as I played with the second setter Briand as a middle blocker to
adjust the block and he succeeded in his new position. I’m still
dreaming to have a big surprise tomorrow against Algeria.” He
said
The first set went point by point all through till the draw
23-23 when Besbes and Mohamed Othmane settled the situation to
their team 25-23. The Burundian star innocent Irdukunda was also
one of the stars and ended the match and the best scorer of his
team with 14 points.
The Tunisian players returned back to their concentration in
the secondd and third sets and improved their block against the
Burundian attacks but finally they depended on the opposite
Besbes to finalize the match as he came as the match best scorer
with 16 points. |
Day 3
Tunisia edges Egypt in the way to the title
Cairo,
Egypt, December 23, 2008- The defending champions Tunisia came
one more step towards keeping the title when they cruised past
the organizers Egypt in straight sets in the third day of the
2008 Boys Youth African Nations Championship here at Cairo
Stadium Complex on Tuesday. The promising Burundi team achieved
their first victory over Libya. Tunisia becomes near the double
as their Junior counterparts won also the African championship
last August.
Egypt vs. Tunisia
Tunisia used their big gun Brahim Besbes and the strong spike
service to clinch a critical victory over Egypt 3-0 (25-17,
25-15, 25-20) in 69 minutes. The Tunisian star scored impressive
20 key points that led his team to the big victory that improved
their record to 2-0 while Egypt dropped to 2-1.
Tunisia head coach Lotfi Ben Slimane expressed his happiness
due to the affectivity of his players to apply his strategy. “I
asked my setter to use the wing spikers at the extremes of the
net and he succeeded to do that. I think also we used well the
spike services to disturb the Egyptian weak defense.” He said
Egypt head coach Reda Elgazale was extremely sad because his
players didn’t apply his strategy. For the second day in a raw
he left the hall without taking to his players.
Tunisia had the upper hand at the start of the match due to the
unstoppable hits of the opposite Brahim Besbes from position 2
and they led 8-3 at the first technical timeout FTT. Egypt
started to arrange the block against the Tunisian attacks as the
centers Mohamed Elaskalany and Mohamed El Mahy did well to score
successive points that decreased the point deficit gradually but
again the Egyptian backline defense had some mistakes that
allowed Tunisia to organize the counter attacks through Besbes
and Arbi Benabdallah to continue leading 16-11. Tunisia
overwhelmed the net action completely through their better block
and attacks as Besbes led his team to win the first set 25-17.
Tunisia started the second set in the same rhythm and sent
their razor sharp spike services that weren’t tolerated by the
Egyptian team and Tunisia led 8-3 at the FTT. Although the
Egyptian coach made some substitutions to adjust the defense but
the Tunisian team started to use the combinations through the
skilful setter Mahdi Sammoud who deceived the Egyptian blockers.
Tunisia stayed ahead 16-9 at the STT due to the superior
performance of Benabdallah and Mohamed Othmane in spiking from
position 4.
The Egyptian coach made some substitutions to save the match
and succeeded to adjust the rotation of his blockers to stop the
Tunisian wing spikers and succeeded to lead for the first time
at a technical timeout 8-6 due to the adjusted block of Hussein
Mostafa. Tunisia regained their rhythm using the spike service
of Besbes and Ben Abdallah to regain lead 16-14 at the STT.
The Egyptian players lost their confidence for a while to allow
Tunisia to use their mistakes and widen the score to 23-17. The
Tunisian coach made some substitution to keep the rhythm where
the substitutes did also a good job to win the set 25- and the
match in straight sets.
Burundi vs. Libya
The promising and more enthusiastic Burundi team cruised past
Libya in a thriller encounter 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17)
in 98 minutes. Burundi improved their win- loss ratio to 1-1
with three points, while Libya dropped to 0-3. The team that
formed only a month before the competition played a great match
as the centers Sixte Nderagakura and Delphin Bigirmana with the
team captain Innocent Irdukunda were the stars of the match ad
played a great role in this victory. The Libyan spiker Mohamed
Badr was the match scorer with 23 points.
Burundi Head coach Ahmed Elgazar was very happy to see the
results of his short work. “I’m happy to win the match against a
strong opponent,” Said Elgazar cheerfully. “I think the big
spirit of my players was the cornerstone of this victory. Now
I’m looking forwards to win against Algeria and Tunisia to
compete for the second position.” He added firmly.
Libya head coach Toufik Mansouri was sad to lose the third
match in a raw and left the hall immediately after the match.
Libya players were steadier in their defense and attacks at the
beginning of the first set so they lead the set due to their
better reception. After Libya led at the FTT and 16-12 at the
STT due to the efficient spikes of Mohamed Abodabbus, Burundi
came to the match after they deployed their solid block of
Nderagakura and Dushime yves to draw and lead for the first time
19-18. Libya came back and succeeded to win the critical points
of the set to win 25-22.
The second set showed better performance from Burundi team
specially the team captain Innocent Irdukunda who sent his
rockets from position 4 till they led 8-7 at the FTT. Libya
struggled to come back but Burundi players became more motivated
to score and to win the set as the setter Patrick Bizimungu did
well to organize his team’s attacks to win the set 25-20 and to
level the score 1-1.
The third set was very exciting as it went point by point and
the score kept near all through till the draw 23-23. Burundi
again used their big gun Irdukunda to finalize the set 26-24.
The highly motivated Burundi players fought for each ball in
the fourth set and tried their best to stop the emergence of
Libya team. The strong spiker Irdukunda with the center Delphin
Bigirmana led their team to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1

Day 2
Egypt sets the second
victory, Algeria defeated Libya
Cairo,
Egypt, December 22, 2008- The organizers Egypt set their second
victory in a raw over Burundi to lead the 2008 Boys Youth
African Nations Championship at the second day of the
competition here at Cairo Stadium Complex on Monday. Algeria
rebounded after losing in the first day to win their second
match against Libya.
The matches were attended by CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani,
Local Organizing Committee and FEVB President Ali Elsergany, SOC
Delegate Joseph Mokanda, Referee Delegate Hassan Ahmed CAVB
Technical Director Mrs. Howyda Mondy and the competition Manager
Gamal Sheha.
It is known that 2009 FIVB Boys Youth World Championship in
Italy features five teams Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and
Burundi who play a round robin tournament determining the
African champions.
Egypt vs. Burundi
Egypt clinched their second victory over Burundi 3-0 (25-16,
25-17, 25-15) in 70 minutes. After Egypt won the first and
second sets the performance showed acute decline as the
promising Burundi team showed very modern volleyball in the
third set to lead 10-2 before Egypt rebounded back to draw 10-10
and win the third set.
Egypt improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0 to lead the round
robin competition with 4 points, while Burundi’s record became
0-1 in their first match.
Egypt head coach Reda Elgazale was not happy although his team
won the second match in a raw because the players did a lot of
mistake in attacks and defense specially in the third set. “The
players were trained well in all these situations and I’m very
sad to see all these mistakes in one match.” He said.
On the other hand Burundi Head coach Ahmed El Gazar was happy to
see his less experienced team playing this good game against
more experienced and better prepared team. “I’m happy with the
performance of my players specially the team captain Innocent
Irdukunda.” He said. “I think with more matches we will
improve.” He added.
Burundi surprised the home crowd with their steady performance
specially in blocking through Dushime Yves and Sixte Nderagakura
and thus they kept the draw 4-4 and Egypt led only at the first
technical timeout (FTT) 8-6. Egypt team changed the strategy to
depend on the middle blocks Mohamed Elmahdy and Mohamed
Elaskalany to start the fast combinations that allowed Egypt to
win the set 25-16.
The Egyptian coach made some substitutions to give some of the
bench players the chance but the team did many mistakes that
allowed Burundi to score many points. The reception of Burundi
team improved to build up the attacks through the setter Patrick
Bizimungu who used his attackers to score more points than the
first set as Egypt won 25-17.
Burundi started the third set with the best performance as they
used the disturbed Egyptian defense to score successive points
till they led for the first time at a technical timeout 8-2 due
to the efficient spikes of Delphin Bigirmana and Innocent
Irdukunda. After the technical timeout the Egyptian coach called
a timeout at 9-2 for Burundi to give his players the reassurance
and they succeeded to get the draw 10-10 through the spikes of
El Mahdy and Eslam Aboulhassan. Egypt continued their superior
performance to win the set 25-15.
Algeria vs. Libya
Algeria edged the much improved Libyan team 3-0 (25-22, 25-17,
25-14) in 73 minutes. The Algerian wing spikers Raouf Nedjar and
Walid Zouai led their team to win the most difficult first set
and then he paved the way for his team to continue the same
rhythm in the second and third sets. Nedjar was the match scorer
with 11 points Algeria improved their win- loss ratio to 1-1
with 3 points to occupy the second position while Libya dropped
to 0-2.
The Algerian head coach Abdelhakim Djehiche mentioned that the
his players were psychologically affected by the defeat against
Tunisia in the first day and thus they were affected in the
first set and then they came back to win easily the second and
third sets. “I think the period of preparation was not enough
for my players so it was apparent specially in reception which
was our big point of weakness.” He said. “We changed our
attacking strategy many times depending on the centers for some
times then on the wing spikers in other periods.” He added.
Libya Head coach Toufik Mansouri was more satisfied with his
players than in the first match. “We played better today because
the players get more improvement by the matches due to our weak
preparation. I’m happy today with the steady performance of my
center Mohamed Abodabbuss, he was my best player in the
competition till now.
The first set was the most exciting due to the exciting rallies
from both teams. Libya improved their block through Mohamed
Abodabbuss and Wassim Altaloua than their first match against
Egypt so Libya led at the first technical timeout (FTT) 8-6.
Algeria came back through the strong left attackers Raouf Nedjar
and Walid Zouai and with the better reception they went through
to win the set 25-22.
The Algerian team started the second set with the same inertia
and depend more on the centers Sofiane Hasni and Sofiane
Haichour to spike from position 3. Algeria stayed ahead widely
all through the set to win 25-17 after a group of successful
spike services.
The Libyan players committed many mistakes in the third set in
reception and digging and this allowed Algeria to control the
set through the spikes of Zouai to win the easiest set 25-14. |

Algeria, Libya and Burundi who play a round robin tournament
determining the African champions.
Egypt vs. Libya
Egypt edged Libya 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-15) in 62 minutes. The
winners were superior in all net activity and used the efficient
centers Mohamed Elaskalany and Mohamed Khater to control the
block and also the right attacker Mostafa Idris who was the
match scorer with 15 points to penetrate regularly the Libyan
defense. Egypt started the competition with a win loss ratio of
1-0, while Libya dropped to 0-1.
Egypt head coach Reda Elgazale was happy to win the first match
and stressed that his players have more to do in the coming
match. “My players are very young and still they have more
efficiency to play better against the rest of the competition
teams. I stressed the setter today to use the middle blockers in
attacks to disturb the Libyan block and
Egypt controlled the match from the start using the solid block
of Elaskalany and the counter attackers through the setter Ahmed
Elkotb who organized the combinations to all net positions.
Libya struggled through their right attacker Ali Shakluwoon and
the improved backline defense to narrow the point deficit
gradually till Egypt won the set 25-17.
Egypt overwhelmed the situation gradually starting from the
second set as their players didn’t allow the Libyan team to
apply the their attacking strategy and thus Egypt won the second
set widely 25-9. the third set showed more improvement in
setting to the Egyptian right attacker Idris and thus he scored
many points that made him the match scorer with 15 points and
Egypt went through easily to win the third set 25-15.
Tunisia vs. Algeria
Tunisia fought for 100 minutes to clinch an important victory
over Algeria 3-1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-20). Algeria started
the match aggressively to win the first set, but quickly Tunisia
used the defect in the Algerian reception to come from one set
behind and win three successive sets due to the superior
performance of the right attacker Brahim Besbes who was the
match scorer with 16 points.
Algeria head coach Abdelhakim Djehiche referred the defeat to
the weak reception of his team. He said that he tried to improve
his defense after the first set but he succeeded only to
rearrange the attacks.
Algeria started the match with more concentration in defense
and their setter Amir Kerboua arranged his combinations to
disturb the Tunisian block and succeeded to lead 8-4 at thre
first technical timeout (FTT). Tunisia rebounded back after two
blocks from the setter Mahdi Sammoud and led for the first time
11-10. Tunisia continued their upper hand due to their efficient
spikes through Ali Ben Abdallah. The Algerian performance raised
to the top at the end of the set as they turned the score from
22-20 for Tunisia to 25-22 to win the first set.
Tunisia improved their block through the centers Mohamed Ayech
and Sadam Ben Daoud and they stayed ahead all through till they
reached to 16-6 at the STT. The Tunisian opposite Brahim Besbes
did a good job in spiking from position 2 to allow his team to
win the set widely 25-10.
The third set was exciting due to the big effort of both teams
in developing the attacks through the good backline defense, but
Tunisia went forwards due to the strong hits of Besbes to lead
until Algeria regained the rhythm through the middle blocker
Sofiane Hasni to draw 13-13. Tunisia regained their good
reception and the left attackers Ali Othmane and Arbi Ben
Abdallah started to work well as Tunisia was ahead 16-14 at the
STT. Tunisia was better in reception afterwards and succeeded to
win the set 25-22 to lead 2-1 in sets.
Tunisia had the upper hand in the fourth set due to their
efficient attacks through Besebes from position 2 and Othmane
from position 4 so they were leading in most of set to win 25-20
and the match 3-1.

Tunisian team comes as one of the most favorite teams in the
competition due to their good preparation program during the
last six months. They played in a local tournament last month
with the Tunisian Junior team, Algeria and Kazakhstan, followed
by a stoppage time due to the school program. The Tunisian team
resumed their preparation since a month through a local camp.
The Tunisian coach Lotfi Ben Slimane said that he wants to get a
World championship slot and to win the Keep the African
championship Tunisian. Tunisia had the record of number of
victories at this age category.
The last competition runner up Egypt had a long term preparation
through a camp in India last September followed by a camp in the
Olympic Center in
Cairo
and finalized their preparation through some friendly match
against Kuwait first team as they played twice against them.
Egypt Head coach Reda Elgazali was optimistic to win
the title in presence of a great competitors Tunisia and
Algeria. “We prepared the team well for the old date of the
competition in September but we tried as far as we can to regain
thr rhythm now through the last camp. The Libyan team had a
short preparation for a week after
the collection of the players from the different provinces of
Libya as the Youth league didn’t start yet in Libya till now.
Algeria comes also as a great favorite owing to the new strategy
of the Algerian Federation that gives a special interest to the
young teams of both genders. The Algerian coach Abdelhakim
Djehiche said that his team was formed since a year and prepared
through some friendly matches against the local teams.
The competition will be held in a round robin format between the
five participating teams. |
