and Ahli Tripoli completed the quarterfinal draw

Libya, April 12, 2008- Ahli Beni Ghazi and Ahly Tripoli
of Libya completed the final 8 teams in the quarterfinal
draw of the 2008 Men’s African Clubs Champions
Championship at the end of the preliminary round here at
Misurata, Libya on Saturday. The two Libyan teams
followed the already qualified Swehli of the home
country that will be represented by three teams with
another three teams from Egypt Al Ahly, Zamalek and El
Guish as well as GSU of Kenya and Esperance of Tunisia.
Ahly Tripoli and Ahly Beni Ghazi teams of Libya
qualified through winning their critical matches at the
end of the preliminary round over FAP of Cameroon and
Daim Hamad of Sudan. Esperance of Tunisia defeated Al
Ahly of Egypt in an early final. Although they lost
against Zamalek of Egypt, the organizers Swehli secured
before their tickets to quarterfinals. In another match
Sonel of Cameroon defeated Al Saggana of Sudan.
The quarterfinal matches will be held on Monday after a
rest day on Sunday as Zamalek meets Ahly Tripoli, GSU
plays Swehli, Esperance plays Ahly Beni Ghazi and will
feature also a pure Egyptian face of between Al Ahly and
El Guish.
FAP and Sonel of Cameroon, Daim Hamad of Sudan and VC
Force of RD Congo will play for 9-12 position
The matches were attended by Local Organizing committee
president Ayad El Misurati, Control Committee President
Abdelhadi Ghzali, Referee commission president Hassan
Ahmed, CC member Morkinyo and CAVB technical director
Mrs. Howyda Mondy in front of more than 3000 spectators
at sports hall in Misurata.
Esperance vs. Al Ahly Egypt

of Tunisia played a world class match and took over the
competition record holder Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 (25-20,
25-19, 19-25, 25-21) in 91 minutes. Esperance used the
weapon of spike service and applied a strong attacking
strategy using the strong attackers Hichem Kaabi, Khalid
Belaid and Marauane Fehri. The Tunisian team finished
the first round at the top of pool C with a win- loss
ratio of 3-0, while Ahly came at the second position
with a record of 1-2 and both teams secured quarterfinal
tickets.
Esperance started the match through sending their
rockets coming from the spike services of Hichem Kaabi
and the Serbian Novac Stankovic as they succeeded to
lead 8-4 at the first technical time out FTT. Ahly tried
to improve the reception to enter the match, but
Esperance started to use the well known spikes of Kaabi
and Marauane Fehri to continue leading 16-9. Again Ahly
tried to use the spikes of Hamdy El Safi and Hamdy Salah
but the Tunisian block succeeded to stop them to win the
set 25-20.
The second set showed several reception and digging
mistakes from Ahly and thus Esperance led 4-0 before
Ahly rebounded after they deployed their block but
Esperance through the spikes of Fehri and Khalid Belaid
led 8-6. Ahly draw for the first time in the match 8-8
before the Tunisian team again dominated the net action
and extend their lead to 23-18 and won the set 25-19.
The third set showed dramatic improvement in Ahly
performance as they led for the first time in the match
a technical; time out 8-7 after a group of spikes from
El Safi and Mahmoud Raouf. They extend their lead 16-14
at the STT after some successful block from Abdelatif
Othman and El Safi. Esperance defense showed temporary
disturbance that allowed Ahly to win the set 25-19.
Esperance started the fourth set using the strong spike
service that made them to lead 4-1, but quickly Ahly
coach Noor Attia asked for timeout and changed the
system of the attacks to lead 8-7 at the FTT. Esperance
improved their block and applied their attacking
strategy to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1
Swehli vs. Zamalek
Zamalek deployed their solid block of Ali Elian and
Mohamed Ali and used the combinations led by the setter
Ashraf Aboul Hassan to win their match against swehli
3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15). The undisciplined Swehli
backline defense made the team in a frequent stress all
the time and fialed to combat Zamalek player. By this
victory Zamalek improved their record to 2-0 and ended
pool A matches at the top, leaving Swheli in the second
position with 1-1 record but both teams already secured
quarterfinal tickets.
The match started in front of more than 3000 spectators
filling Misurata hall but Zamalek succeeded to go
against their hopes as they led 8-1 at the FTT after a
group of efficient spikes from Mohamed Abdel Monem and
Saleh Fathy. Swehli tried to decrease the point deficit
through the improving the block but Zamalek dealt well
with this situation to win the set 25-17.
The second and third sets showed more dominance for
Zamalek as they used their spikers to press regularly on
Swehli block and defense to win easily 25-13 and 25-15.
FAP vs. Ahly Tripoli
Ahly Tripoli of Libya made it three out of three for the
Libyan clubs as they defeated FAP of Cameroon 3-1
(25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23) in their final match in
pool D. Ahli Tripoli played a great match supported by
their spectators and succeeded to use the ability of
their strong spikers specially Jonah Adamu and Salem
Majdi to penetrate their opponent defense regularly.
Sonal did their best to save a quarterfinal position and
succeeded to win the second set narrowly, but finally
the better Libyan team won the match. The victory put
Ahly Tripoli at the second poison of Pool D after GSU of
Kenya from a 1-1 record and secured a quarterfinal
ticket. FAP finished the preliminary round third from
0-2 record and play for the 9-12 positions.
Ahly Beni Ghazi vs. Daim Hamad
Ahly Beni Ghazi made their qualification to the
quarterfinal and defeated Daim Hamad of Sudan 3-1
(25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20) in 86 minutes. Ahly ended
the pool B matches in the second position with a record
of 1-1 and qualified with El Guish of Egypt who ended at
the top of the pool. Daim Hamad ended their matches in
the third position with a record of 0-2 to play for 9-12
positions.
The first set showed early dominance for Ahly Beni Ghazi
as the right attacker El Montaser El Farwi played a
great role in spiking from position 2 and aided by the
wing spiker Rachid Bousellam from position 4. As these
spikes were not tolerated by Daim Hamad team, Ahly won
the set 25-19.
The second set featured activity in Daim Hamad team
specially the right attacker Angeeg Domanic who spiked
well from position 2. Daim Hamad arranged also their
block of Ibrahim Mutaz and Abaid Fakhereldin and thus
they led 8-6 at the FTT. Ahly defense disturbance was
the reason that the Sudanese team continued leading
16-12, but on the critical points Ahly returned back
through their good reception and again El Farwi spiked
well with Hassan El Ashibi to win the set 25-22 after
frequent mistakes from Daim Hamad.
One again Daim Hamad came to the match with their
disciplined back line defense that allowed the setter
Ossama El Baholi to make his combinations that were used
well by that was used well by the left attacker
Abdelrahman Hassan and his colleague Osman Omar to lead
16-12. Like the second set Ahly regained the rhythm and
lead 24-23 and lost the match point to allow Daim Hamad
to score three successive points and win the set 26-24.
Ahly rebounded in the fourth set and their setter El
Muntaser played a great role in their victory 25-20 in
the last set and 3-1 in the final score.
Al Saggana vs. Sonel
Sonel of Cameroon came from one set behind to achieve
3-1 victory over Al Saggana of Sudan 3-1 (15-25, 25-12,
25-19, 25-12) in 81 minutes. Al Saggana stated the match
in a very good performance specially in blocking and
also Back line defense so they won the set comfortably
25-15. Sonel returned back and succeeded to adjust the
block against the opponent’s attack and thus they
succeeded to win three successive sets.
Sonel ended Pool C matches in the third position from a
win- loss ratio of 1-2 and qualify to play for 9-12
positions, while Saggana came at the bottom of the pool
with a record of 0-3 and end their match in the
competition in the 13th position.
