Kenya clubs search a
new title abroad
The
shifting of the Africa Women’s Club Volleyball
Championships from Nairobi to Cairo is anything but good
news to Kenya as the representing teams are searching
for a new continental title as the Kenyan clubs usually
do. The competition will be held in Cairo 27 April to 4
May with a wide participation of three teams. The move
means that local teams will have a hard task to reclaim
the title Kenyans last won in 2005 through Kenya
Commercial Bank. Egypt’s Al-Ahly won it in 2006 and
retained it last year.
This year, KCB, Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons are the
three local teams that will be doing battle in Cairo for
the continental diadem.
The respective coaches - Paul Bitok, Sylvester Kioko and
David Lung’aho - said yesterday it won’t be an easy job
to capture the crown on foreign land. Bitok, however,
sounded optimistic when he said it is the quality of the
players that will matter and not the venue.
“Though fans will give the home side an added advantage,
we will strive to do our best and we will hopefully
capture glory,” Bitok said.
KCB has acquired the services of five new players -
Joyce Tarus, Florence Bosire, Grace Cheptoo, Esther Ouna
and Truphena Nyongesa - to boost its squad. A total of
20 players have since started training for the April 25
- May 5 event.
“I’ll name my final squad of 12 on April 14,” Bitok
said. One player, Mercy Moim, has moved from KCB to
Prisons.
Meanwhile, Lung’aho led out his Prisons troops in
training at the Nyayo Stadium yesterday in preparations
for the tournament.
The Warders won their first national league title last
year, beating both KCB and Pipeline. However, they lack
experience at this level with only three players Moim,
Jane Wacu and Lydia Maiyo having taken part under KCB
and Kenya Pipeline.
