Egypt Men Followed Their Women Counterparts to World Championship Finals


Egyptian volleyball repeated the rare double as their Volleyball Men team followed in the footsteps of the Women counterparts and had a ticket to 2006 World Championships in Japan following their third victory in raw over Sudan 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25- 9) in the third and final day of African Qualification Group D here in Alexandria, Egypt. The Northern African country had this double before when both Men's and Women's teams qualified to 2002 World Championships in Germany and Argentina respectively.
Over 2000 spectators attended the final match in Sports Union Club Hall saluted the Egyptian team which changed blood in this competition in their way to have a new competitive team.
"I tried to give all the players the chance to proof their outstanding with the national team and I think we succeeded to build up a new young team promising in the near future" Said the Egyptian coach, Vecelin Vukovic. "Now I'm thinking of the next competitions especially African Nations Championship this summer and the World Championship next year" He concluded.
Sudan Coach said "We had many problems before the competition because we started only three monthes ago with a new team replacing the old players. It was not easy for us to improve quickly but I will continue working till we reach our goals".
Egypt playing with most of the reserve players found it easy to penetrate Sudan's Block and backline defense to win the third match and ensure their vacancy in the prestigious 2006 competition.
In the other match, the depressed Cameroon players started the match against RD Congo lazily after they lost the day before against Egypt and subsequently lost their World Championship dreams. But the retain their momentum to defeat their opponents 3-1(17-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-17) 0n 69 minutes.
Cameroon came from one set behind to win three successive sets defeating Congo after a high performance of the outstanding players specially Jean Nziemi and Sombang Tonemassa. The victory gave the winner the second place in the tournament after Egypt with five points ahead of RD Congo which came third with 4 points leaving Sudan in the fourth place with 3 points.
